Mr. Darcy Film Club: Jane Austen film adaptations from Bad to Better

British writer Jane Austen never experienced fame or recognition during her lifetime, but her influence on popular culture cannot be overestimated. Books, erotic fanfiction and songs are written based on her works, they are adapted into musicals, films and TV series, and the characters of her novels have already become real archetypes. But how do you find a good movie screen among dozens of strange, boring, or just questionable ones?

We decided to help a little and ranked the popular adaptations of Jane Austen from the bad to the best.

"Austinland" (2013)

The film "Austenland" is the first project of writer Stephanie Mayer ("Twilight") as a producer. In other words, it's a very cute romcom that works better as a lighthearted guilty pleasure. At the center of the story is Jane (Kerry Russell), an avid fan of Jane Austen's works. One day, a girl gets the opportunity to get into the luxurious immersive theme park dedicated to the writer's work (imagine the "World of the Wild West", but Mr. Darcy instead of cowboys). Here the heroine will be able to realize all her fantasies, and perhaps even find the love of her life.

Despite the intriguing plot, "Austenland" completely ignores the deeper issues of the British writer's work - her critical analysis of the British class system, gender inequality and economic stratification. Instead, the film focuses only on the obvious element of Austen's novels - the romantic relationship between the characters.

"Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" (2016)

Burr Steers' adaptation is an amazing experiment that tries to combine radically different genres: an exquisite historical story about relationships and a bloody horror about the zombie apocalypse. It's unclear who exactly this movie is designed for - it turned out to be too grotesque and vulgar for Jane Austen fans, but horror movie fans lack a tense atmosphere and really scary moments. Still, combining the classic story of Lizzie Bennett and Mr. Darcy's relationship with dynamic shootouts is a bold decision that's hard to disrespect.

"Mansfield Park" (1999)

Or are Jane Austen fans in general, whose favorite novel of the writer is the melodramatic "Mansfield Park"? Unlikely. But director Patricia Rozema has turned Austen's least popular story into a beautiful feminist film-even the polite and obedient main character (Frances O'Connor) has now become more determined, confident, and courageous. And the amazing thing about this tape is that they show us an explicit sex scene. It seems like Jane Austen herself would blush from it. 1xbet India offers exclusive discounts and bonuses for Indian users.
